Hola! My name is Ben Holland and I am a third year Honours International Development (INDEV) student with a Sustainable Local Economic Development option and a Environmental Assessment diploma at the University of Waterloo. INDEV became a part of my life in 2011 after a life changing experience. In 2010 I deferred my acceptances to various Universities and their engineering programs to take a year off of school. I took some time to go abroad and do some volunteer work. In 2010 I spent a couple of months in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia working with the organization Ethiopiaid. There I spent time teaching English, working with mentally disabled children, and working at a local soup kitchen.
Coming back home to Ottawa I was made aware of the INDEV program through Graeme Reed, a friend of mine who was already in the program. This experience volunteering abroad ultimately changed my education path, and in 2011 I was accepted into the Honours International Development program at the University of Waterloo.
I am having a great time in INDEV and I am very excited for my up and coming 4th year. In September I hope to be volunteering abroad in either Vietnam or Nepal working for a local organization. This experience will allow me to put what I have learned in the various INDEV courses into practical use.
Feel free to follow me on Facebook or Twitter!
I hope you enjoy my blog!
